Why "Be Yellow?"

"Be Yellow" is inspired by the hit song Yellow, which put the rock band Coldplay on the map in 2000.  It's a goal really - a philosophy on how to live.  Like many of Coldplay's undercover Gospel songs, the lyrics to Yellow send a powerful message to a secular MTV culture in need of some light.

The Gospel of John quotes Jesus saying "I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."  In Matthew, He calls His followers to shine that light... which is what color?

Our interpretation of the song (with some creative input from our good friend JB) presents a double meaning for "yellow."  While most references in the song represent the call to shed light, some point to a human tendency to cowardly ignore that call.

For example, the second verse:
"I drew a line, I drew a line for you [Christ pointed the way to truth]
Oh what a thing to do, and it was all yellow" [that line is the light of the world]

"I swam across, I jumped a across for you, [He rose from death to life for us]
Oh what a thing to do, cuz you were all yellow" [we were/are cowardly!]

So BE YELLOW (the brave beacon of light, not cowardly) is a battle cry.  We've all been both.  The daily struggle asks...

Which type of YELLOW will we be today?
