"Game Day" Eve

After all the planning and build-up, the wedding events finally got rolling on Thursday, July 19.  My sister Megan and I picked up my good friend Jason Brown at Midway and made a pilgrimage east to the Holy Land for something even holier than a game involving a pigskin.  We dropped Megan off with the bachelorette party crew, and I finally got to meet Sarah’s college friend Karen, who was a bridesmaid.  Jason and I bolted for CJ’s (undisputed burger champion of the world), meeting fellow MBA classmate Trey Hamilton, who had flown in from South Carolina.

Friday, things really heated up as the rest of the wedding party arrived by early afternoon.  The rehearsal in the Basilica was not until 6:00, but I had set up an exciting surprise for 4:00.  Some thankfully didn’t ask too many questions (Daren), but others made it more difficult (Reffett!) to explain why we had to meet at the Morris Inn by 3:45.  I made up something about the photographers and musicians needing to meet with us, and fortunately most were present in time to follow us over to the House that Rockne Built.  Thanks to a friend in high places, I was able to set up a tour inside Notre Dame Stadium.  Our guide from the athletic department took us inside the media entrance and gave his spiel about the history of this sacred place (I tactfully refrained from correcting any minor errors in accuracy).  Next, we rode up the elevator to the 5th floor of the press box, where special guests watch the games.  From there we were treated to the following views of the stadium and campus (from inside the President’s box).

Then he let our feet grace across the sacred turf, which was actually in need of some work.  Some disease has attacked the grass.  Rumor is the desecration first appeared after the MSU players planted their flag on the 50 yard line.  Anyway, we were able to run a few routes and feel the ghosts of a storied tradition seep into our bones.

Is that Rockne looking over his troops?

Rudy is no longer the only person to be carried off the field.

The only disappointment came when we were denied access to the locker room, and I was unable to deliver a thundering rendition of the Rockne pre-game speech I have memorized.  Nonetheless, we walked across campus from college football’s Cathedral to the Basilica with an extra hop in our step.  “Game day” was almost here.  After showing my cousin Brad the record 7 Heisman Trophies (he’s a Miami Hurricane guy, so he’s more familiar with handcuffs than Heisman hardware), we practiced for the main event.  It went like clockwork, because it had to.  There are 4 weddings every Saturday, so they have to roll through all the rehearsals.

We finished up the evening with a wonderful dinner at the Inn, thanks to my dad, Glen.  Both of our dads gave touching, heartfelt toasts and Reffett gave an inspired blessing.  We watched a video highlighting our path to each other, which can be seen here.  Also, Sarah and I were happy to give a small token of our appreciation to the wedding party and special guests.

We were ready.  As guests poured into South Bend from all over the country, the stage was set for the most heavenly of "game days."
