Go Raiders!
Last night we had our sports banquet at St. Rose of Lima. Sarah coached the junior high tennis team, and they had a very successful season. Depending on the outcome of a league match today, they may hold onto their first place finish. I coached the 3rd and 4th grade ("Widget") Boys Basketball team. We finished 9-5 including a successful run in the tournament. After losing in the second round, we battled in the losers' bracket all the way back to the championship game.
The season was a blast, and I couldn't imagine a better group of young players to work with. I was amazed at how much they absorbed. They were able to learn and execute several plays, including some Coach Oloffson Herscher Tiger plays I ran in high school (which you can see on the video).
Thank you to the parents for the awesome plaque, which displayed our team prayer by Knute Rockne.
Dear Lord, In the struggle that goes on through life, we ask for a field that is fair, a chance that is equal with all the trouble, the courage to strive and to dare. If we should win, let it be by the code, with our faith and our honor held high. And if we should lose, let us stand by the road and cheer, as the winners go by. Amen.
Also, thanks to Rolando for the beautiful Cubs hat and Thomas and Aaron for the restaurant gift cards!
My favorite part of the evening was watching the boys' faces during the first screening of our highlight video. Their pure passion is what sports are all about.

Holy Cow. Those were some great back door passes. You guys played some strong defensive and offensive basketball. I was impressed. As a former player and coach I want to congratulate you guys on a great season.
Where did the name widget come from?
I would have T'ed your coach up once or twice just for fun. (He was on the court during at least one play during the video.)
Intense video. I saw some Carmeloesq moves.... great ball handling skills.
