Going to the Beach- in Colorado

Last weekend, Ryan and I joined Kati, Paul, and Wyatt on a camping adventure.  This was Wyatt's first camping trip.  We drove about 3 hours southwest of Denver to the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

We got off to a late start but made it down to the dunes in plenty of time to spend an afternoon setting up camp and then hiking up some of the dunes.  It is quite a place.  On one side of you there are lush, green, tree-covered mountains and then on the other it looks like you are in a desert that stretches for miles in front of you.  There is a "river" the runs in the middle of these two sides.  It is the run-off created by the melting of the mountain snow and is fairly wide but only about and inch deep.  Wyatt was IN LOVE with the water.

After some play time we headed back to camp for a delicious dinner of grilled chicken and vegetables.  Wyatt mostly enjoyed the hummus which he continued asking for the rest of the weekend.  You can check out below his preferred way to consume it.

The evening was EXTREMELY windy and we were afraid for awhile that the 5 of us would have to try to sleep in the car.  Wyatt and Paul slept good, Ryan slept okay, Kati and I had terrible nights of sleep but nonetheless we all made it to morning.  Paul and I got in a run around the lake we were camping by and then after a egg and bacon breakfast we packed up camp and headed back to the sand dunes for some more fun in the sun/sand.

Paul had another special surprise in store for us once we left the dunes.  He took us to a waterfall that is made from snowmelt and if you are willing to dunk your feet in FREEZING cold water you can hike back through the rocks and stream to see the waterfall and an ice wall that is still in the process of melting.  It was definitely worth the cold and was a highlight of the trip.

Thanks for taking us with you and also for your camping expertise- we'd probably have starved, frozen to death, or blown away without your help Paul (and Kati).

Wyatt loves feeling the water and sand between his toes.

Looks like we're in a desert- until you see the green mountains in the back.

Hiking in the sand dunes is easy when you get to ride in one of these...."GO DADDY"

No cracker needed....this is why he gets his own cup of hummus.

The water was freezing, but I guess that huge block of ice should've been our first hint.
