The "All-American Road"

You know Sarah and I are always ready for a road trip.  We wasted no time again this year as we hit the road the first day of summer vacation.  After spending time in L.A., we headed up to Santa Barbara, where we enjoyed a weekend with my long-time friend Tony.  From there we hopped on the "All-American Road" ...aka Pacific Coast Highway... aka California Highway 1.  Whatever its name, it has earned its fame.  My dad and I drove down it after returning to LA from the Stanford-ND game in '06.  This was Sarah's first trip up the coastline.

As we approached the Bay Area, we made the obligatory (in my book) stop at the greatest fruit stand in the world - Casa de Fruta.  We spent 3 days in San Francisco.  It was Sarah's first trip to the Bay, so we took in all the sites:  Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street, Chinatown (did you know this is where fortune cookies were invented?), Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, Golden Gate Park, the "Googleplex," and Stanford.

I had been looking forward to revisiting my favorite restaurant, the House of Nan King.  If you are ever in the Bay Area you must fit it into your plans.  The owner is legendary chef Peter Fang, and he is the Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" of the Chinese restaurant world.  After our first meal there, it didn't take much to convince Sarah to return the next night for another feast.  Amazing!

Special thanks to our good friends Tony in Santa Barbara and Marshall in the Bay Area for their fine hospitality.  (As you know, Sarah and I have an aversion to hotel rooms.)

Here are a few pics.  See the full album here.

They tell me this bridge is famous.

They tell me these redwoods in Muir Woods are 966 years older than I am.
